This week’s sound effect is an
example of my favorite commandment from The
Sound Effects Bible. Commandment 8 states that you need to get right up on
the source of your recording. For my
example I’m giving you a recording of how I would have done it in the past
(just pointing the microphone at the door), and then I’m giving you an example
of the proper way (getting right up on the squeaking hinge). There are no effects processors on either
recording, besides a little compression to even out the volume.
My
observation is that the second one is very vibrant with the sound of the hinge
actually bouncing and squeaking against itself.
You can tell what the first one is, but after comparing the two, the
second one has way more character.
Granted, I wouldn’t use these in a film, as they are slightly annoying
and were the only door I had access to at the moment, but I think the example
gets what I wanted to across.
